The Distribution Reset: When Did We All Become SEO-PR Hostages?
Distribution channels are broken. Especially PR and SEO. The ones you think you can pay to win. You can’t. And it leads to a bizarre situation where:
- You pay a PR firm $15,000 to get mentioned in a newsletter that even the newsletter writer’s mom doesn’t read, let alone your target audience
- Your writers are having existential crises trying to please Google’s algorithm (“Should this H2 be about pain points or solutions? Title case? sobs in SEO”)
- Everyone’s “building in public” but the public is mostly other people building in public
- Your target prospect never comes close to seeing your (expensive) efforts
We’re all nodding along like this makes perfect sense.
We;re paying five figures…to get ignored.
How We Got Here (A Tragic Comedy in Four Acts)
The promise was beautiful: The internet would democratize distribution! Anyone could reach anyone! No gatekeepers needed! Information is free! Anyone can pitch! Anyone can write for Google! The reporters and Google will surface what matters.
Nope.
Instead, we built new gatekeepers, each more expensive and less effective than the last:
- SEO agencies selling visibility they can’t even gurantee
- PR firms selling their “relationships” to reporters who don’t have time to read their pitches
- Platform algorithms selling our reach back to us
- Newsletter aggregators selling access to inboxes (that are full of other newsletters)
- Reporters who do filter are so bombarded they can never find the ones that matter (yours)
We replaced old middlemen with new ones, each taking their cut not in dollars but in something worse - our souls. Okay, fine, our authenticity. But it feels like souls.
The Real Cost of Fake Distribution
Let’s talk about what this distribution hellscape is actually costing us. (Spoiler: It’s not just your marketing budget and will to live)
-
It rewards gaming over value
- The best content loses to “10 Ways to Optimize Your [exact keyword match]”
- Your genuine insights get buried under 47 AI-generated listicles
- The person who games the system best wins (and they’re probably selling courses about it)
- The best relationships and the best SEO has a very, very loose correlation with the best content
-
It creates false metrics
- Traffic numbers that would make your analytics look amazing… if they were actual humans
- Engagement stats that mostly measure how good bots are at clicking
- Success metrics that have nothing to do with success (but look great in pitch decks!)
- Your $15k PR spend buys you 3.7 seconds of attention from a VC’s EA (who’s really just scanning for her own name)”
-
It kills sustainable creation
- Writers spending more time on keyword research than writing
- Small players needing a second mortgage to compete on Google
- Quality becoming that thing we all talk about but never have budget for
-
It doesn’t actually work
- The best content is buried under whatever company had the biggest distribution budget
- Your brilliant insight ranks below “25 [Topic] Tips That Will SHOCK You”
- The only people finding your content are other marketers trying to build backlinks
The Distribution Reset We Need
Okay, enough complaining. Here’s what a less soul-crushing system might look like:
1. Human-Scale Distribution
Think less “spray and pray” and more “actually knowing your audience’s names.” Revolutionary, I know.
- Build audiences of 100 true fans (instead of 100,000 bots)
- Focus on relationships that don’t require API access
- Measure impact by something other than vanity metrics
2. Rethinking Discovery
- Building small but focused distribution channels you own
- Using PR/SEO as amplifiers, not primary channels
- Creating content valuable enough that people actively share it
- Accepting that reach will be smaller but more meaningful
- Earn and deserve conversion from inbound to owned audiences
The goal isn’t to abandon distribution - it’s to stop letting distribution demands corrupt your content.
3. Built the trust
- Have real humans behind the content
- Have real data behind the content
- Have real relationships with the audience that isn’t pure gloss
Breaking Free
The goal isn’t to abandon PR and SEO - it’s to stop being driven by them. Here’s how:
-
Use middlemen, don’t let them use you
- PR firms should amplify your story, not create it
- SEO should support your content, not dictate it
- Keep control of your narrative and relationships
- Make sure that the content actually tells your right story
-
Build your foundation first
- Develop real expertise and point of view
- Create content worth amplifying
- Build direct relationships you actually own
- Then let PR/SEO multiply what’s working
-
Measure what matters
- Measure audience quality over quantity
- Focus on sustainable growth over viral spikes
- Value retention over acquisition
A Personal Note
I’m putting my money where my mouth is. This post:
- Isn’t SEO optimized
- Won’t be promoted by a PR firm
- Won’t be pushed through growth hacks
- Will probably reach fewer people
And that’s exactly the point.
Because if this resonates with you – if you’re tired of the distribution game too – then we’ve just proved that real value can find its way to real people without the PR-SEO industrial complex.
Maybe that’s all the distribution we ever needed.
If this post found you without algorithmic optimization or PR promotion, consider it a small victory for human-scale distribution.
